What is the cost of the new service?
The proposed rate for the new system is $0.05 to $0.10 per cpu-hour and is
based on the assumptions that this service will receive partial overhead
funding and that the CPU utilization rate will be 70%. This is a proposed
rate that change slightly depending on the final configuration of
the system, the provided support services, and the scientific community's
interest/commitment in using the system.
Given that IT will be providing a new cluster service, will IT still provide the LBNL Scientific Cluster Support (SCS) service offering?
Yes, provided there is continued community need and interest, IT will
continue to provide the SCS service. In the future, IT plans to support
two services, Laboratory-wide Research Computing and Scientific Cluster
Support.
Will the overhead funding for the current SCS service offering go away?
SCS receives overhead funding to cover the fixed cost of maintaining our cluster support infrastructure and leading edge cluster expertise. Currently there is no plan to eliminate the overhead funding for SCS.
