  Frequently Asked Questions

When will the new system be available?

The system is anticipated to be ready for full production in Dec 2008.

How much computing time can I get?

The system will be initially configured to use fair scheduling without allocations for six months. At that point, we will review the usage and the LRC Allocations Task Force will review and make a recommendation.

What is the cost of the new service?

There will not be a charge for compute cycles for the FY09 year; however, there is a $25/mo. user account fee for storage and backups of the home directories.

Given that IT will be providing a new cluster service, will IT still provide the LBNL Scientific Cluster Support (SCS) service offering?

Yes, provided there is continued community need and interest, IT will continue to provide the SCS service. In the future, IT plans to support two services, Laboratory-wide Research Computing and Scientific Cluster Support.

Will the overhead funding for the current SCS service offering go away?

SCS receives overhead funding to cover the fixed cost of maintaining our cluster support infrastructure and leading edge cluster expertise. Currently there is no plan to eliminate the overhead funding for SCS.
