Generating a One Time Password

You need two pieces of information from SCS to use your CryptoCard to log in: your username (hereafter referred to as $USERNAME) and your initial CryptoCard PIN. You should have received both of these with your CryptoCard.

Press the "PASSWORD" button to power on the CryptoCard. You will see "PIN?" request prompt. Enter your PIN, and press the "ENT" key. You should see 7 digits presented like a phone number; this is your one-time password. You can only use it once, and if eavesdroppers intercept it, it cannot be used again to gain access to your account.

Cryptocard usage

Feeding incorrect PIN into the card for 7 consecutive times will LOCK your Cryptocard. You will have to bring th card to our group for unlocking it by reprogramming. So please avoid feeding incorrect PINs even by mistake.

A maximum of 20 generated cryptocard passwords with no successful login will put the card out of sync and will LOCK and disable the card in our server database. Your card will continue to generate passwords but they will not work. We will have to re-sync the card and we can do that by email or phone.

Connecting to the Lawrencium Cluster

To connect to your cluster account from onsite at LBL or from offsite, use:
 ssh $USERNAME@lrc-login.lbl.gov
You will now see a prompt:
 Response:
Type in your one-time password "phone number" as it appears on your CryptoCard screen, and press enter. You are now attached to the SCS user shell. It will look like this:
 scsh>
Here you can only do a few things. Type help to see a list of allowed commands. If you need assistance, contact scs@lbl.gov. You will probably want to get to an interactive shell on one of the login nodes, so type shell at the prompt, and press enter. You will see something like this:
 scsh> shell
 logging into 'n0001.scs00'
 [$USERNAME@n0001 ~]$
A variety of useful packages are stored in the environment modules system which you can access using the module command. This will show you a list of what is available:
 $ module avail; module list
At this point, you may begin using the system.
